A new Nordic café is opening in Sheung Wan this summer, taking over the space occupied formerly by another Nordic café, Hjem.

Brainstormed by Elin Fu and Nelson Htoo of restaurant group Common Abode, which opened Hjem in 2021, Venner is coming to life to re-establish a piece of Nordic café culture in Sheung Wan.

In a variation to their former concept, Venner will focus on homemade Nordic baked goods and pastries, coffee, matcha, and select natural wines.

In an announcement shared on Instagram, Elin says, “Four years ago I opened my first café Hjem with my partner Nelson, a little love letter to where I’m from and how I grew up. I wanted to bring a slower, cosier kind of café culture to Hong Kong, something that felt like home in the middle of all the noise.

Last year we made the tough call to change direction. Not because Hjem wasn’t loved, but because we felt it was time. We all know this city moves very fast, and to grow, sometimes you have to pivot, adapt, and start fresh. It’s so scary (F&B is no easy game), but if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the good stuff often starts with a risk.”

No official timeline has been set for the café’s opening. Make sure to check in with Foodie to get all the latest news!
