On the night of Jul. 8, Foodie and Disney+ broke bread together at Jimmy’s Kitchen, a seminal culinary institution in Hong Kong, to celebrate season four of the hit TV series “The Bear” and the enduring power of food in bringing people together.
Joining 50 hungry foodies, we enjoyed a seven-course meal served by executive chef Russell Doctrove, inspired by ingredients central to the story of season four of “The Bear”’.
The grand Secret Suppers dinner began with our guests congregating outside an MTR exit, before whisking upstairs to Jimmy’s Kitchen, ensuring the secret of the restaurant and the menu is kept until the dinner begins.
With opening speeches led by Rubin Verebes, managing editor of Foodie, and Brian Yung, Senior Marketing Specialist at Disney+ Hong Kong, the occasion marked the first time an experiential dining experience has been hosted in Hong Kong for “The Bear”.
Glasses of Saicho single origin sparkling tea were poured, before sharing starters arrived to the table with a delectable Hot Smoked Salmon Rillete served in butter lettuce, Coronation Fried Chicken with buttermilk, apricot, and almond praline, and “The Bear”-inspired Seared Hokkaido Scallop, with corn, brown butter hazelnuts.
Rubin and Brian joined chef Russell on the floor following the starters for a short Q&A session to explore his story as a chef in Hong Kong, his connection with the nearly-100-years-old Jimmy’s Kitchen, and why his menu of classical Continental cuisine stands strong in a modern culinary space.
The mains were promptly served, with guests enamoured with the familiar Red Wine Braised Wagyu Beef Cheeks, pomme puree, veal demi glace, and Cavatelli, Italian sausage & chorizo ragu, nduja, grana Padano – both ingredients inspired by the show’s latest season – and the Norwegian Salmon, olive oil potatoes, sun dried tomatoes, capers, fennel.
The grand night ended with a picture of all guests donning a special “The Bear”-themed t-shirt and blue apron, à la chefs Carmy, Sydney and their team. We couldn’t forget the Braeburn Apple Crumble, calvados, cinnamon, english custard, which rocked the table and sent us on a merry way.
