Hidden behind Flat Iron’s newly relocated Sheung Wan location, a new British craft beer pub is coming to the area with HKD10 pints every Thursday.

The Powder Monkey, in partnership with British craft beer makers Powder Monkey Brewing Co., is arriving with a taste of Britain, expect funky pale ales, West Coast ales, and wheat beers with fish and chips and sausage and mash.

The cheap weekly Thursday drinks deal pairs well with the screening of live Premier League matches mid-week and on the weeknights, once the pub is expected to open publicly later in the summer.

The pub is set to open daily from 12PM to 12AM.

Hong Kong boasts some of Asia’s best cocktail bars and the culture that comes with it, but this city also lays claim to embracing a classic pub culture, a remnant of the colonial British days and comfort to many pub-loving foreigners living here.

Whilst bars present a more modern approach to drinking with flashy cocktails and innovation, pubs reflect traditionalism with a more rustic vibe and simple offerings in the alcohol section with pints of beer and cider, glasses of wine, and salty plates of food to match.

For those seeking an evening at a pub to sink a few pints, here are our top picks in Hong Kong.

The best pubs in Hong Kong

Delaney’s Kowloon

Down into the basement you go exiting the noisy centre of Tsim Sha Tsui and you will find yourself entering through a portal into a pub that could be found in any street of Dublin or Belfast. Delaney’s is homely, pouring a great pint of Guinness and Tetley’s, both with the mandatory froth to enjoy the beer in its entirety. The pub regularly streams football and rugby games for ardent sports fans.

Delaney’s Kowloon, B/F, Mary Building, 71-77 Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2301 3980

The Queen Victoria

A fan favourite for many homesick Brits living in Hong Kong, The Queen Victoria is one of Wan Chai’s more favoured pubs simply for its no-frills approach with fresh pints of beer and quick service. For European football fans, this place will have live games playing as late as 3AM kick offs. Luckily, their happy hour extends from 4PM to 10PM, ensuring you won’t be missing a pint with a discount late into the night.

King’s Belly

Tai Po’s King’s Belly pub is a very close replica to a British-styled pub in Hong Kong with their dolled-up interior. With oaky bar tops, worn-in floors, and high chairs with plump cushion seating, this is where you go for the basics, but the familiar basics. Their beer is fresh and they specialise in a beastly Sunday and holiday roast menu with all the meats and trimmings.

King’s Belly, Shop C, G/F, Mei Fung Building, 6 Wan Tau Kok Lane, Tai Po, 2663 3550

The White Stag

A few doors down from The Queen Victoria, The White Stag is a classic pub on the Wan Chai strip well known for their live sports and atmosphere. Their prices are fair and their beer selection is broad with Belgian, British, American, Japanese, and local Hong Kong draught beers. The pub shuts at 4AM on weekends so you can fit in all of your pint-drinking.

Ned Kelly’s Last Stand

For over five decades, Ned Kelly’s Last Stand has served those seeking a pub experience in the Tsim Sha Tsui area. Their large bar menu imports a variety of British and European draught beers for many pints to be enjoyed at this venue. Check their social media to see their schedule for live music and bands playing.

Breaks evidently emulates a proper Wetherspoons, neighbourhood-style pub from British origin with an oaky interior, plump bar seating, and a strong pour of Guinness. The Prince Edward-pub is located just off Boundary Street. Many loyal patrons to the space head there for a competitive game of snooker in the back of the pub.

On the night of Jul. 8, Foodie and Disney+ broke bread together at Jimmy’s Kitchen, a seminal culinary institution in Hong Kong, to celebrate season four of the hit TV series “The Bear” and the enduring power of food in bringing people together.

Joining 50 hungry foodies, we enjoyed a seven-course meal served by executive chef Russell Doctrove, inspired by ingredients central to the story of season four of “The Bear”’.

The grand Secret Suppers dinner began with our guests congregating outside an MTR exit, before whisking upstairs to Jimmy’s Kitchen, ensuring the secret of the restaurant and the menu is kept until the dinner begins.

With opening speeches led by Rubin Verebes, managing editor of Foodie, and Brian Yung, Senior Marketing Specialist at Disney+ Hong Kong, the occasion marked the first time an experiential dining experience has been hosted in Hong Kong for “The Bear”.

Glasses of Saicho single origin sparkling tea were poured, before sharing starters arrived to the table with a delectable Hot Smoked Salmon Rillete served in butter lettuce, Coronation Fried Chicken with buttermilk, apricot, and almond praline, and “The Bear”-inspired Seared Hokkaido Scallop, with corn, brown butter hazelnuts.

Rubin and Brian joined chef Russell on the floor following the starters for a short Q&A session to explore his story as a chef in Hong Kong, his connection with the nearly-100-years-old Jimmy’s Kitchen, and why his menu of classical Continental cuisine stands strong in a modern culinary space.

The mains were promptly served, with guests enamoured with the familiar Red Wine Braised Wagyu Beef Cheeks, pomme puree, veal demi glace, and Cavatelli, Italian sausage & chorizo ragu, nduja, grana Padano – both ingredients inspired by the show’s latest season – and the Norwegian Salmon, olive oil potatoes, sun dried tomatoes, capers, fennel.

The grand night ended with a picture of all guests donning a special “The Bear”-themed t-shirt and blue apron, à la chefs Carmy, Sydney and their team. We couldn’t forget the Braeburn Apple Crumble, calvados, cinnamon, english custard, which rocked the table and sent us on a merry way.

The post The best British restaurants in Hong Kong appeared first on Foodie.

We think British cuisine undeservedly gets a bad rap. Far from being the stereotypical boring, bland, and overcooked dishes of the past, today we think there’s much to love about a comforting plate of bangers and mash, hearty Sunday roast with all the trimmings, or warm-from-the-oven sticky toffee pudding.

When we’re yearning for the best flavours that Britain has to offer, these are the restaurants we turn to in Hong Kong.

The best British restaurants in Hong Kong

1. Magistracy Dining Room

Magistracy Dining Room The best British restaurants in Hong Kong

Magistracy Dining Room, Black Sheep’s British stunner, is the only restaurant on our list to garner a Michelin recommendation, and that’s for good reason. Chef Alyn Williams is passionate about singing the praises of British cuisine, which he showcases at this grand Tai Kwun eatery in a refined à-la-carte menu. The Magistracy sausage roll (HKD188) and shepherd’s pie (HKD588) are elevated renditions of these classic British recipes, whilst the showstopper of the menu is the rib of beef (HKD1,088 for 2), carved tableside. Above all, however, is chef Alyn’s lavish Sunday roast (HKD688 pp) menu.

2. The Globe

A long-standing favourite in Soho, The Globe is cherished by British expats and locals alike as one of the only proper gastropubs in Hong Kong, with its warm and welcoming vibe rivalling the top pubs in London. The craft beer selection here is also one of the best in town, featuring both rotating guests taps and full-time taps from Hong Kong and around the world. To accompany your booze, The Globe’s authentic British fare is first-rate; go-tos include the Scotch egg (HKD95), beer-battered Atlantic haddock (HKD190) with mushy peas, chips, and curry sauce, and Glamorgan sausages (HKD195), more colloquially known as bangers and mash. Perhaps most beloved of all though are the pub’s rib-sticking pies (HKD175), which come with mash, peas, and gravy.

3. The Chinnery

Another swish British dining experience can be yours at The Chinnery, housed within the Mandarin Oriental hotel since its opening in 1963, with its exclusive private gentleman’s club feel. The whisky bar and restaurant is fittingly named after 19th-century British artist George Chinnery, famous for his landscape paintings of Hong Kong. The colonial-style ambience is mirrored in the à-la-carte menu rooted in British-Indian cuisine. The lamb samosa (HKD168) and tikka chicken (HKD368) are perennial Indian-style favourites, but The Chinnery also features a selection of traditional British dishes, from fish & chips (HKD378) to a daily roast (HKD598).

4. 181

Offering sweeping harbour and skyline views, especially as the sun sets, 181 is the elegant in-house restaurant of gourmet British grocer Fortnum & Mason. The menus change with the seasons, but they always include 181 signatures that never fail to impress, such as the smoked bone marrow with parsley salad and shallot jus (HKD208), beef Wellington for two (HKD1,288), and Knickerbocker Glory (HKD108) ice-cream sundae dessert. The oh-so-British afternoon tea (HKD588 pp) at 181 is also a daily treat, coming with a tiered assortment of finger sandwiches, scones, and afternoon tea cakes.

BRICK LANE is named after the vibrant street in London’s East End, and as expected at this restaurant, the menu veers towards iconic British dishes. The number 1 order at its Admiralty and Tsim Sha Tsui locations is the BRICK LANE Full English (HKD158), available all day long, a slap-up breakfast plate of eggs, smoked salmon, sausage, ham, bacon, tomato, baked beans. mushroom, hash browns, Yorkshire pudding, and toast. An equally filling choice is the Guinness beef pie (HKD188).

6. King’s Belly

Tai Po is not an obvious location for a traditional British public house, but King’s Belly fits that bill to a tee, complete with British beer on draught, sport on the telly, and expat regulars. On a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday, the pub’s roast menu is a must-order, either the roast US Prime beef (from HKD228) or roast crackling pork belly (HKD198), both wonderfully satisfying in their own right and made even more so with all the accompanying trimmings, including a divine homemade Yorkshire pud. King Belly’s all-day Indian curry menu – British pub grub at its finest – is also recommended.

We get it – baking is hard. For those unwilling to nurture a temperamental sourdough starter or who simply don’t have the luxury of baking appliances like an oven, we Hong Kongers know we can always rely on experts sweating it out in bakeries for quality pastry.

In Hong Kong, we’re fortunate to have seen more and more exceptional Western-style bakeries opening up over the past five years, joining the crowd of beloved Chinese-style bakeries churning out local favourites such as egg tarts and pineapple buns

Hong Kong’s best bakeries

Neighbourhood bakery Bakehouse was founded by Swiss pastry chef Grégoire Michaud, whose more than 25 years of experience baking includes a stint at the Four Seasons, Hong Kong. Bakehouse’s à-la-carte menu at their Wan Chai location lists an extensive array of delightful dishes that are best enjoyed in-house – just be prepared to queue.

Dishes like the age-old steamed crab pork patty, hand-shredded chicken and duck drumstick combo, fisherman’s salted fish and salted fish pot, and Tanka-style steamed pork with shrimp paste join the pack for guests to savour a cuisine rarely seen in Hong Kong.

If you’re torn on where to settle for a few glasses in town, follow our guide to where to find the best spots in Hong Kong for your next sip.
