We think British cuisine undeservedly gets a bad rap. Far from being the stereotypical boring, bland, and overcooked dishes of the past, today we think there’s much to love about a comforting plate of bangers and mash, hearty Sunday roast with all the trimmings, or warm-from-the-oven sticky toffee pudding.

When we’re yearning for the best flavours that Britain has to offer, these are the restaurants we turn to in Hong Kong.

The best British restaurants in Hong Kong

1. Magistracy Dining Room

Magistracy Dining Room The best British restaurants in Hong Kong

Magistracy Dining Room, Black Sheep’s British stunner, is the only restaurant on our list to garner a Michelin recommendation, and that’s for good reason. Chef Alyn Williams is passionate about singing the praises of British cuisine, which he showcases at this grand Tai Kwun eatery in a refined à-la-carte menu. The Magistracy sausage roll (HKD188) and shepherd’s pie (HKD588) are elevated renditions of these classic British recipes, whilst the showstopper of the menu is the rib of beef (HKD1,088 for 2), carved tableside. Above all, however, is chef Alyn’s lavish Sunday roast (HKD688 pp) menu.

2. The Globe

A long-standing favourite in Soho, The Globe is cherished by British expats and locals alike as one of the only proper gastropubs in Hong Kong, with its warm and welcoming vibe rivalling the top pubs in London. The craft beer selection here is also one of the best in town, featuring both rotating guests taps and full-time taps from Hong Kong and around the world. To accompany your booze, The Globe’s authentic British fare is first-rate; go-tos include the Scotch egg (HKD95), beer-battered Atlantic haddock (HKD190) with mushy peas, chips, and curry sauce, and Glamorgan sausages (HKD195), more colloquially known as bangers and mash. Perhaps most beloved of all though are the pub’s rib-sticking pies (HKD175), which come with mash, peas, and gravy.

3. The Chinnery

Another swish British dining experience can be yours at The Chinnery, housed within the Mandarin Oriental hotel since its opening in 1963, with its exclusive private gentleman’s club feel. The whisky bar and restaurant is fittingly named after 19th-century British artist George Chinnery, famous for his landscape paintings of Hong Kong. The colonial-style ambience is mirrored in the à-la-carte menu rooted in British-Indian cuisine. The lamb samosa (HKD168) and tikka chicken (HKD368) are perennial Indian-style favourites, but The Chinnery also features a selection of traditional British dishes, from fish & chips (HKD378) to a daily roast (HKD598).

4. 181

Offering sweeping harbour and skyline views, especially as the sun sets, 181 is the elegant in-house restaurant of gourmet British grocer Fortnum & Mason. The menus change with the seasons, but they always include 181 signatures that never fail to impress, such as the smoked bone marrow with parsley salad and shallot jus (HKD208), beef Wellington for two (HKD1,288), and Knickerbocker Glory (HKD108) ice-cream sundae dessert. The oh-so-British afternoon tea (HKD588 pp) at 181 is also a daily treat, coming with a tiered assortment of finger sandwiches, scones, and afternoon tea cakes.

5. BRICK LANE

BRICK LANE is named after the vibrant street in London’s East End, and as expected at this restaurant, the menu veers towards iconic British dishes. The number 1 order at its Admiralty and Tsim Sha Tsui locations is the BRICK LANE Full English (HKD158), available all day long, a slap-up breakfast plate of eggs, smoked salmon, sausage, ham, bacon, tomato, baked beans. mushroom, hash browns, Yorkshire pudding, and toast. An equally filling choice is the Guinness beef pie (HKD188).

6. King’s Belly

Tai Po is not an obvious location for a traditional British public house, but King’s Belly fits that bill to a tee, complete with British beer on draught, sport on the telly, and expat regulars. On a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday, the pub’s roast menu is a must-order, either the roast US Prime beef (from HKD228) or roast crackling pork belly (HKD198), both wonderfully satisfying in their own right and made even more so with all the accompanying trimmings, including a divine homemade Yorkshire pud. King Belly’s all-day Indian curry menu – British pub grub at its finest – is also recommended.

The Merchants review: refined Shanghainese fare meets stunning views in Central https://www.afoodieworld.com/blog/2025/07/07/the-merchants-review/ Sun, 06 Jul 2025 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.afoodieworld.com/?p=95167 Foodie reviews The Merchants, an elegant Shanghainese restaurant in Central led by chef Chen Tian Long that offers incredible views

The post The Merchants review: refined Shanghainese fare meets stunning views in Central appeared first on Foodie.

]]>
The Merchants is indeed quite something to behold.

The first restaurant to open at lifestyle destination FORTY-FIVE when it made its grand debut in early 2023, this upscale Shanghainese eatery showcases the winning fine-dining trifecta of expertly prepared cuisine, drop-dead views from its 44th-floor location, and a tasteful interior design that pays tribute to the glamour of Belle Époque Shanghai.

Chef Chen Tian Long is the perfect man for the job, crafting an expansive menu of Shanghainese dishes brushed by influences from the neighbouring provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. For the seven years that chef Chen oversaw the kitchen of Shanghainese stalwart Jardin de Jade, the restaurant retained its Michelin star.

One of the eight great cuisines of China, Shanghainese cooking is not as subtle as Cantonese or Chiu Chow nor is it as in-your-face as Sichuan or Hunan. It has a distinct savoury-meets-sweet flavour profile, employing both soy sauce and sugar to great effect.

We visited The Merchants to try the newly unveiled weekend brunch menu (HKD580 pp), which is notable for its unlimited servings of a wide array of appetisers, dim sum, soup, mains, rice and noodles, and dessert. However, many of the bites featured on this menu are also available à la carte, so we’ll note these prices where appropriate.

Our table was wall-to-wall covered with dishes by the time all our orders had been placed, and whilst there were no disappointments, some dishes stood out more than others.

chicken in sesame sauce The Merchants review
Chilled shredded chicken with green bean noodles and sesame sauce (brunch only)

The appetiser winners were the chilled shredded chicken with green bean noodles and sesame sauce and marinated beef shank and tripe with five-spice soy sauce (HKD138 à la carte), a study in contrast.

The shredded sesame chicken is a Shanghainese staple, here elevated with super slippery, thick, and chewy noodles and a rich, nutty, salty sauce with a hint of sweetness enveloping the chicken and noodles.

spicy beef shank The Merchants review
Marinated beef shank and tripe with five-spice soy sauce (HKD138)

The marinated beef, on the other hand, is an explosion of fiery, meaty flavour. We loved the textural variance between the tender shank and slightly chewy tripe.

In terms of dim sum at a Shanghainese restaurant, xiao long bao (HKD118/4pcs à la carte) is a given. The Merchants’ xiao long bao is a killer rendition featuring a delicate skin and plenty of savoury soup. At brunch, these dumplings are taken up a notch with a version made with huadiao wine, upping the aroma and depth of flavour.

lion’s head meatball The Merchants review
Braised meatball in sweet soy sauce (HKD228)

Our first main, the braised meatball in sweet soy sauce (HKD228 à la carte), was our ultimate dish of the tasting. A classic Shanghainese recipe that’s often referred to as “lion’s head meatball,” this meatball has a supremely soft, almost fluffy texture and a traditional sweet sauce that also manages to achieve an intense umami. Bravo, chef Chen!

spicy fried chicken The Merchants review
Deep-fried spicy and salted chicken with garlic (HKD298)

We took a turn to Sichuan with our next main, the deep-fried spicy and salted chicken with garlic (HKD298 à la carte), whose garlicky, chilli-laden aroma hit our nostrils before the plate landed on the table. This is an addictive dish, where the fried chicken remains both crispy and juicy.

You could also opt for the brunch-only main of salt-cured Yunnan pork, morel mushroom, white cabbage, and peas claypot rice, which is simultaneously earthy, salty, and slightly sweet – delicate and delicious.

We stuck to Shanghainese tradition with the dessert of glutinous pearls in osmanthus sweet soup with rice wine (HKD58). This soothing, aromatic soup has a unique flavour from the inclusion of fermented rice that never fails to satisfy.

Our verdict of The Merchants

We felt a sense of relaxation as soon as we walked into The Merchants’ elegant dining room, and the views only increased that sense of calm. Chef Chen’s refined Shanghainese menu is vast and diverse, yet each dish is thoughtfully designed and well executed. There are plenty of classics to please purists alongside more creative recipes to keep things modern and interesting.

Since its opening in Hong Kong in 2015, Hong Kongers have fallen head over heels for Lady M’s signature mille crêpes cakes in a multitude of flavours, from green tea and Earl Grey to the recently launched Dubai chocolate.

One iconic flavour that’s been missing from the pack is pandan, a bestseller at Lady M’s shops in Singapore. That’s all about to change now that the global dessert boutique has brought the Lion City’s signature pandan mille crêpes to Hong Kong.

The rightful star of the show is the pandan kayak mille crêpes (HKD78/slice; from HKD510/whole cake), featuring 20 delicate crêpes layered with pandan cream and coconut-flavoured kaya custard.

Exclusive to Hong Kong and Macau is the newly unveiled pandan mango shortcake (HKD68/slice; from HKD480/whole cake), which combines two of our favourite Southeast Asian flavours in one tropical, aromatic sponge cake.

These pandan treats will only be available at Lady M Hong Kong for a limited time, so get ‘em while you can!

We list our top spots for devouring crispy fish and fluffy chips in equal measure

For those British ex-pats pining for a taste of home or Hong Kongers who consider fish & chips a deserving comfort food, this British dish ranks as one of the most iconic and nostalgic in that nation.

So where should we head for in Hong Kong when we’re in search of a piping-hot plate of battered or crumbed fish, golden chips, and all the traditional fixings? We’ve got your cravings covered with our round-up of the best fish & chips in town.

The best fish & chips in Hong Kong

1. Hooked

Folks residing in Mid-Levels are lucky to have Hooked at their doorstep. This chippie refers to itself as “Kiwi style,” and its sustainable fish hails from New Zealand waters. The batter here is crisp and light, fried in Australian sunflower oil, and you can taste the difference. Hooked serves up battered or breadcrumbed hoki (HKD55) and blue cod (HKD55/HKD120), and both are fried to order and absolutely delicious. On a different British note, Hooked’s meat pies (HKD60) – steak, steak and kidney, and chicken and mushroom – are also spot on.

2. Fish Bar

Fish Bar Where to find the best fish & chips in Hong Kong

In mid-2024. JW Marriott Hong Kong unveiled its refreshed Fish Bar concept, long a popular al-fresco restaurant for leisurely lunches and romantic dinners sat poolside. One all-time favourite dish that has remained on the menu is the sustainable Oasis giant grouper fish & chips (HKD320) – the priciest contender on our list, but worth it. The grouper, sourced from a regulated local fishery in Lau Fau Shan, is coated in a beer batter before deep-frying, making it ultra crispy. It’s served with the classic accoutrements of smashed peas, chunky chips, and tangy tartar sauce for dipping.

White Beard is popular on Peel Street for its cosy, tucked-away vibe and reputable East-meets-West fare. Alongside the restaurant’s flaky, crispy signature fish & chips (HKD128), we adore the Thai-inspired tom yum calamari (HKD98) and all-steak pie (HKD88). Uniquely for a chippie, in addition to the standard craft beer by Young Master Brewery, White Beard offers spritzes and sours, orange wine, shots and shooters, cocktails and mocktails – and even shisha!

There are many reasons to frequent Soho gastropub The Globe: its relaxed, homey vibe, its impressive beer range, and its food menus showcasing honest British fare. After a Scotch egg (HKD95) starter, an order of beer-battered Atlantic haddock (HKD190) is a must, a flavourful piece of golden fish accompanied by crushed minted peas, triple-cooked chips, and curry sauce. Follow that up with the toffee popcorn cheesecake (HKD85) of your dreams and Bob’s your uncle.

Whilst the new Central branch of The Captain’s has gone viral for its funky egg waffles, it’s the original AIRSIDE outlet that is more well known for its fish & chips (the egg waffles are also available here). Without a hint of oil upon serving, The Captain’s fish & chips (HKD88/HKD128) is hearty, salty, and well fried, coming with homemade tartar sauce. Instead of chips, you can opt for your battered fish to arrive with a serving of one of the eatery’s creative pasta dishes, perhaps the mentaiko white spaghetti (HKD118).

Chef-founder Manav Tuli is always at the top of his game at Leela, and his newly introduced Royal Experience tasting menu at the Causeway Bay Indian restaurant is a fine display of the chef’s precision and ingenuity.

The new multi-dish tasting menu (HKD1,188 pp) is chef Manav’s homage to the culinary craftsmanship of India’s ancient dynasties and royal courts. To design the menu, the chef spent countless hours researching long-lost recipes from Persian manuscripts, Ayurvedic traditions, and historic documents.

Each dish tells a story of India’s past in a creative, modernised way. The menu kicks off with the tangy rasam fish-cheek soup, a recipe once developed by royal Ayurvedic physicians in ancient Madurai to treat an ill prince, and vataka crab and lentil cake, a warrior’s snack enjoyed during the Mauryan Empire.

Then come the likes of the Mughal dish shishranga murg, or six-colour chicken, adapted from the Persian cookbook Nuskha-e-Shahjahani, kola urandai lamb croquette favoured by Sangam soldiers and hunters, and qaliya Shirazi Persian lamb stew, a staple of Mughal royal court life.

This meticulously researched and executed tasting menu ends with the khaja pistachio cream crisps, also originating in the Mauryan era. An optional Saicho sparkling tea (+HKD260 pp) or wine (+HKD400 pp) pairing add-on is available.

Casa Sophia Loren Where to brunch in Hong Kong in 2025

Just in time for summer, Casa Sophia Loren has introduced the delightful A’ Tavola Brunch (HKD588 pp) with a focus on the light, fresh, and vibrant flavours of southern Italy. The semi-buffet spread offers a fresh seafood bar of Alaskan crab legs, Boston lobster, yellowfin tuna carpaccio, and more, plus an antipasti table laden with Italian cold cuts and artisanal cheeses. Next up, head to the pasta corner for handmade pasta and risotto, followed by a decadent main course (perhaps Mediterranean sea bass in white wine sauce or double-baked pumpkin and goat cheese soufflé). Finally, savour a sweet finale by digging into cannoli, black truffle burnt cheesecake, and one-metre-long millefeuille.

HENRY Where to brunch in Hong Kong in 2025

Get ready to unzip or unbuckle following a brunch session at Rosewood hotel’s sleek American steakhouse HENRY. Chef Jorge Vera Gutiérrez’s American weekend lunch menu (HKD798 pp) is a US-inspired banquet of sorts, and we’re here for it. The menu begins with an assortment of sharing starters, including the likes of gravlax, lobster bisque, wedge salad, and buttermilk fried chicken, and then it’s time for the main event. The Australian M4 Wagyu New York strip or USDA Prime tenderloin (+HKD198) are the obvious options, but the Juicy Lucy burger – 180 grams of dry-aged beef, American cheese, and fried egg on a homemade brioche bun – is a worthy rival. For dessert, we adore both the grilled banana sundae and sizzling brownie (+HKD98).

But what makes one egg tart stand out from the rest? We list the top contenders in the city

The post Where to find the best egg tarts in Hong Kong appeared first on Foodie.

]]>
Despite the debate on the origin of Hong Kong’s beloved egg tart – was it the British or Portuguese who introduced it to Hong Kong? – we can confirm that this local pastry was popularised here in the 1940s by cha chaan tengs serving up inexpensive Western-influenced comfort food.

We sought out the best versions of this Hong Kong pastry staple to find out which ones egged on our taste buds the most. Read below to find out our top egg tarts in the city and let us know which one reigns supreme for you!

The best egg tarts in Hong Kong

1. Hashtag B

Hashtag B best egg tarts in Hong Kong

Hashtag B is a hip bakery – scooping our Foodie Forks 2024 Best Bakery award – with multiple branches where the egg tarts are hot commodities for their often funky flavours. Baking up the most expensive egg tart on our list, Hashtag B’s napoleon tart (HKD18) delivers an elegant, flower-shaped puff pastry shell that’s flaky, light, and airy. The tart’s velvety filling has a more subtle egg flavour compared to many of its counterparts, without being sickly sweet. Queuing for one of these babies is almost a given, so we recommend checking with the shop to see when their freshly baked tarts are sold each day (usually two to three times daily).

2. Bakehouse

Bakehouse best egg tarts in Hong Kong

Serving Hong Kong since 2018, artisanal neighbourbood bakery Bakehouse by pâtissier extraordinaire Grégoire Michaud is a beacon of sourdough goodness. In particular, the bakery’s sourdough egg tart (HKD12.50) has featured on many an Instagram feed and reel. Despite its somewhat smaller size, the tart’s laminated sourdough pastry base is more buttery and crispy than most, holding a large portion of uber-creamy egg-custard filling. Their website boasts that they’ve sold over 21 million egg tarts since their launch, and many tourists feel a trip to Hong Kong isn’t complete without a to-go box of Bakehouse’s egg tarts for delicious sustenance on their journey onwards.

3. Baker by LUBUDS

Baker by LUBUDS best egg tarts in Hong Kong

Baker by LUBUDS is a boutique Quarry Bay bakery delivering premium European baked goods with a touch of Japanese influence. The baker in question is Stephen So, formerly of Rosewood Hong Kong. Baker’s egg tart (HKD13) is crafted with a sinful croissant base, and the caramelised top layer makes for even more indulgence. The filling is wobbly, creamy, and rich. Head to this bake shop’s Cityplaza location at 9:30AM, 12PM, and 3PM each day to get a taste (and whiff) of their freshly baked egg tarts straight from the oven.

4. Shun Hing Restaurant

An oldie but goodie, Shun Hing Restaurant has been going strong for four decades, offering a classic cha chaan teng experience in Kowloon City. Shun Hing is most well known for its baked pork chop rice, milk tea, fried dough balls, and – you guessed it – egg tarts. The diner’s egg tart (HKD8) is the most wallet friendly of the lot, and if you buy five tarts, you’ll get one on the house. Shun Hing’s egg tart, featuring golden, flaky pastry and a silky filling, never fails to bring a smile to diners’ faces, especially when it’s still warm.

5. Tai Cheong Bakery

Famous the world over for its egg tarts, Tai Cheong Bakery has a long history in Hong Kong dating back to 1954, and today it even boasts a flurry of branches in Singapore. Tai Cheong’s OG egg tart (HKD12) is made with a buttery shortcrust (“cookie crust”) pastry shell, with a rich, eggy interior that leaves a hint of sweetness on the tongue. Its glossy finish and perfectly coiffed shape look very appetising, though its fluorescent yellow hue could be alarming to some. This old-school bakery manages to keep up with the times, also presenting an egg tart made with puff pastry, which seems to be the more popular base these days.

6. Queen Sophie

The Queen Sophie brand was founded by celebrity singer Sarah Wong, and it’s the premium ingredients used that make this bakery’s preservative-free egg tart (HKD13) stand out from the pack. Queen Sophie’s egg tarts are purportedly made with 368 layers of puff pastry. We recommend pairing your Hong Kong-style egg tart with a Macau-style Portuguese custard tart (HKD18) and picking your favourite of the two rivals.

Often commanding long queues, Gold Garden’s egg tart (HKD11) is known far and wide for its multi-layered puff pastry crust that is ultra flaky and buttery – chef and Street Eats host Lucas Sin is even a fan. The smooth, rich, and subtly sweet filling is as perfect as can be. The hype is real with this one!

8. Soft Thunder

Soft Thunder best egg tarts in Hong Kong

With locations in Kennedy Town and Wan Chai, Soft Thunder is a local artisanal bakery that continues to innovate its egg tart recipe, recently unveiling its egg tart 3.0 (HKD13). The flaky but sturdy crust is made with two types of Japanese flour and premium French butter, and the filling features a unique combination of Japanese eggs and Chinese Hubei eggs to achieve a silkier, richer texture than most. The newly introduced coffee mochi egg tart (HKD17) is a lusciously chewy variation on the original.
