A stunningly picturesque country sandwiched between China and India, Nepal’s cuisine might not be as well known as that of its two towering neighbours, but it’s just as worthy; the nation offers a diverse range of delicious dishes beyond the ubiquitous momo, Nepal’s dumpling staple.
Hong Kong has plenty of recommended Nepalese restaurants, with many wallet-friendly spots concentrated in the bustling Jordan neighbourhood of Kowloon. Check out our guide to the best Nepalese eateries in Hong Kong when you’re craving momos, thalis peppered with an assortment of flavourful dishes, and more bona fide plates from Nepal.
The best Nepalese restaurants in Hong Kong
1. MoMo Moment

In Kennedy Town, MoMo Moment is a super-convenient stop-off point on a midweek evening after work when we can’t be bothered cooking. As its name suggests, the USP at this recently relocated and spruced-up spot is the Nepalese dumpling known as the momo. The steamed or pan-fried momos come in several varieties, including chicken, pork, spiced potato, and soya squash. The pricing is extremely good value – HKD38 for five momos, HKD52 for eight momos, and HKD60 for 10 momos.

2. Himalaya Restaurant

Himalaya Restaurant has long been a go-to spot in Wan Chai for relishing both Indian and Nepalese dishes, though the owner hails from Nepal. If you’re looking for smoky grilled flavours, the chicken sekuwa (HKD89) and lamb sekuwa (HKD98) skewers are recommended, whilst the Himalaya tikki (HKD54) and chana and aloo chapate (HKD55) are authentic potato-focused Nepalese starters. We also rate the hearty and robust khasi ko masu (HKD90) mutton curry.

3. Ex-Gorkha Restaurant & Bar

Another no-frills spot, this time in Jordan, Ex-Gorkha is regularly mentioned as one of Hong Kong’s top Nepalese restaurants. The chilli chicken momos (HKD65/10pcs) here can’t be beat – the heat quotient is on point. Ex-Gorkha’s sukuti (HKD100) is legit too, giving Hong Kong diners an opportunity to try this unique traditional Nepalese dish featuring marinated, spiced, and smoked dried meat.

4. MT.8848 Himalayan Cafe & Restaurant

Named after the height of Nepal’s famed Mount Everest, this is a social enterprise run by The Gurkhas Group charity and funded by the Home Affairs Department. We love the variety of flavours showcased in the Himalayan rice set at MT.8848, be it the chicken, pork, or vegetable (HKD120) or mutton or fish (HKD130) versions. The aloo chukauni (HKD45) spicy potato and yoghurt salad is an ideal vegetarian starter to prep the palate for the flavour punch to follow.

5. Nepal Restaurant

Nepal Restaurant is the grandaddy of our city’s Nepalese lot, having survived three decades in fickle Hong Kong. The traditionally decked out space is homespun and comfortable, with warm and attentive service to match. The set dinner menu (from HKD248 pp) is a must-order for experiencing a wealth of Nepalese fare. The menu kicks off with starter choices that include steamed chicken or vegetable momos and bhenta tareko, deep-fried aubergine accompanied by an assortment of chutneys. The main course consists of either a BBQ or curry dish from the à-la-carte menu, along with rice and naan. A daily dessert and tea or coffee complete this very solid deal.

6. SPICY SALT

SPICY SALT offers a lively fusion experience in Jordan, with grilled chicken or pork choila (HKD88) and a sukuti set (HKD165) competing with the likes of tacos and pizza. The chicken, pork, or veg momos (HKD88/10pcs) are a hit too and come in a range of styles; there are steamed, fried, and kothey (half-fried and half-steamed) versions for purists, but we always go for the jhol (+HKD10) variety, which comes drenched in a spicy tomato and sesame sauce.

7. KTM Nepalese Restaurant

Moving once again to Kennedy Town, KTM showcases beautifully presented, vibrant Nepalese dishes in a colourful space. The restaurant has been delighting diners since 2018 with genuine dishes the likes of bara (HKD68/HKD88) spiced lentil patties, samosa singada (HKD38/2pcs), and poleko kukhura (HKD108) Nepalese-style chicken tikka. In terms of KTM’s dumplings, we rate the creative butter chicken momo (HKD48/HKD78) for a saucy change of pace.

8. YALAKHOM

Yet again situated in Jordan (are you sensing a theme yet?), this cosy and chilled restaurant is cherished by both Nepalese ex-pats and locals for its passionate staff. A go-to at YALAKHOM is the YALAKHOM platter (HKD113), which features the best of the best of Nepalese cuisine – and that includes pork khutta ko achar (pig trotter curry), rare in Hong Kong. We also recommend the chicken (HKD81) or pork (HKD82) thukpa, a soothing noodle soup, and pyajee (HKD61) onion croquette.

9. Manakamana Nepali Restaurant

Manakamana is a cheap and cheerful eatery that’s been serving up classic Nepalese eats in Jordan for more than a decade. The menu is varied and extensive, and despite numerous visits over the years, we’ve yet to order a dish we haven’t devoured. The lunch and dinner set C (HKD90) is a great gut-busting option that includes a choice of curry (it’s the mutton for us), seasonal soup or drink, samosa or spring rolls, rice, and naan. Adventurous diners shouldn’t miss out on the traditional – and healthy – Nepalese soups served at Manakamana; we suggest either the pungent gundruk ko jhol (HKD70), made with fermented mustard greens, or sisnu ko jhol (HKD70) nettle soup, a lighter option.
